Acai Sambazon
Acai juice (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a product made from the fruit of the Acai Palm (Euterpe oleracea). The Acai Palm is native to Central and South America, and grows in swamps and floodplains.
Over the past few years, acai juice has grown to be an immensely popular fruit juice and health food craze. The acai berry is about the size and shape of a small grape, roughly one inch around. It ranges from dark purple to green in color (depending on the particular species). The seed is large, taking up about 80 percent of the total fruit.
Acai fruit juice tastes very pleasant. I would describe it as tasting like a raspberry with a hint of chocolate. It's not the sweetest juice I've ever had but it has a pleasant flavor. Most acai juice products sold in America are sweetened with agave nectar or sugar. Although usually I'm a purist, I admit the sweetened acai berry juice products are pretty awesome. I am particularly fond of Sambazon Acai juice. Energizing and delicious.
The purest I have had is acai fruit juice from Genesis today. It's pure acai fruit with scrapings of the seed. Genesis today explains that they scrape the seed to get a more full range of antioxidants. Great product, in my opinion. The seed scrapings don't change the taste or texture, they just enhance the antioxidant profile. If I were going to make a regular habit of drinking their acai berry juice, I would sweeten with some raw honey.
Acai juice has become popular primarily due to hype generated by Network Marketing companies. It's a great product and it does have a fantastic nutritional and antioxidant profile. This is true of most berries, though, including goji berries, blueberries, and cranberries.
The companies that say that acai berry is more nutritious than any other food are invariably selling it. Acai juice is excellent in many ways but not the miracle marketers would have you believe.
As with all things, be objective. Allow yourself to try acai juice for a month. Pay attention to how it makes you feel. At the end of the month, decide for yourself if it's worth the cost. If not, try another "superfood". There are lots of good options out there.
